Van Life: Life on the road in a converted van and a pocket-sized Beagle has been a liberating and rewarding experience.
Now after nearly four years of traveling in the van, which I’ve named Gus, along with my pocket beagle and travel companion, Dolly. (formally known as DollyLlama) We chat a lot on road trips from one end of the country to the other, boondocking along the way. I like this life, I haven’t tired of it yet. But who knows what the future holds.
At the end of 2013, I headed out of LA and back on the stage. As a single mom, I had successfully raised a wonderful daughter, and aside from checking back into town between gigs, it seemed like a good time to hit the road. She was quite happy with this decision as well. (Lol!) There were growing pains for both of us, but worth it. We grew closer while farther apart. We learned to appreciate each other more this way, and still do all these years later.
There are pros and cons to life on the road – WiFi is sometimes iffy, I’m not always able to make or send auditions, FaceTime fills the space and distance between those I love, but I am truly richer and happier in spirit and tenacity. Honestly, for me, it’s mostly pros. Enjoying what’s in front of me in the places I travel to, and the people I meet along the way has been the gift.
